It instantly became my favorite of the day due to its shaded areas, beautiful maple trees, and route along the Sabinal River. The East-West Trail was at the bottom of the cliff. The hike downhill is just as steep as the climb up. It's just as beautiful, in my opinion.Īnd, of course, if you go up, you must go down. However, you can get the same view with less travel if you stay on the trail. Once you finally reach the top of the 2,200-foot cliff, you'll have to divert yourself away from the East Trail and walk about. It's the best leg and glute workout you'll get that day. In addition to the rocky terrain, the East Trail has about a mile and a half of climbing up a steep incline of steps to get to an overlook that shows the Hill Country treetops and Sabinal River. The feature was formed thousands of years ago by water flowing through the Sabinal Canyon walls. Lost Maples State Natural AreaĪlong the East Trail, there's a cool Monkey Rock point of interest where you'll find a unique limestone outcrop that has the face of a monkey. Since I hiked alone and didn't have phone service, I did my best to stay near families and other groups while on this trail. The Maple Trail merges into the rough East Trail that you'll need hiking shoes or running tennis with grip at the bottom because of the loose rocks along the route. For example, the maple trees in Texas don't produce syrup like their cousins to the north do. I learned several fun facts along the trail thanks to the signs you can read while strolling. Once I parked in the crowded lot for day-use visitors, I followed the herd of people heading to the Maple Trail, an easy route for those looking for a short hike. I'm bummed I didn't have enough strength to check out the West Trail (3.6 miles) or the West Loop Trail (2.4 miles), but I plan to next time I have a chance to book a reservation. I explored three trails during my trip: Maple Trail (0.4 miles), East Trail (3.1 miles), and the East-West Trail (1.0 miles). Lost Maples features more than 10 miles of trails for its visitors. And, of course, the abundance of colorful autumn leaves.
